Healthy Food Lover's Newsletter, Issue #22 -- The "Super" Herbs
January 14, 2014
Hello Healthy Food Lovers,

The "Super" Herbs

Super herbs such as Wild Yam have a long history of being used to bring back balance - especially to your hormones.

And one of the most important hormones is Progesterone as it is needed to produce and regulate essential hormones.

Estrogen, Testosterone, and Progesterone must all be in balance in order for your body to optimally function as well as deal with stress.

Black Maca and Wild Yam are probably two of the "best" herbs for helping to create this balance in your body.

And using one of these herbs along with the most "revered" herb of all time aka Reishi Mushroom - should bring about a great change in your energy as well as your hormonal health.

Black Maca

Maca is a tuberous root vegetable that resembles a radish and grows in the highlands of South America. Maca is a perennial plant native to places like Peru and Bolivia.

Maca contains numerous amounts of minerals such as: Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Copper, Zinc, Iron, Selenium, Manganese, and Boron.

Maca also has a few of the B Vitamins and Vitamin C.

This root also contains: Essential Amino Acids, Essential Fatty Acids, Hormone Regulators, and Polysaccharides aka Ormus Elements.

Maca comes in a wide range of colors. The most common color is yellow, but Maca can range in color from white all the way to black.

Maca's color will be the result of the soil in which it was grown as well as climatic conditions. Different colors of Maca will come with different health promoting properties.

And based on various studies, it looks like black Maca may be the most potent especially for men.

Black Maca is known for increasing: Sperm Production, Improving Memory/Concentration, Aiding Depression, Increasing Libido, Improving Bone Strength/Density, and Increasing Stamina.

Maca is a powerful adaptogen because it contains stress enzymes. Maca makes these stress enzymes in order to survive at the highest altitudes on the planet.

In turn, these stress enzymes can help your body cope with stress and help to restore balance to your body - in particular your hormones.

You see when your body is under great stress it will secrete a stress hormone called cortisol. And in order for your body to make cortisol, it will need to use up a hormone called Progesterone.

To help your body deal with stress Maca appears to provide more testosterone for men - as well as a better balance of estrogen and progesterone.

Even though testosterone is a dominant male hormone, men also produce estrogen and progesterone. And when the balance of these three hormones is off - you will have Man Boobs, Osteoporosis, and an Enlarged Prostate.

BTW, Progesterone has to be in balance with estrogen in order for your bones to stay strong and dense - as well as your mind to remain calm.

Most osteoporosis problems in the United States may actually be caused (in part) by a hormonal imbalance rather than a calcium deficiency - since we do not appear to have diets low in calcium.

Wild Yam

Wild Yam is a beautiful tuberous vine. This perennial plant grows in tropical and sub-tropical climates around the world.

Other names for Wild Yam are Mexican Wild Yam, Colic Root, China Root, and Rheumatism Root.

It appears that Wild Yam has powerful polysaccharides or Ormus elements. However Wild Yam's most active ingredient appears to be Diosgenin.

Diosgenin is a precursor to the sex hormone Progesterone which helps to balance the sex hormone Estrogen. It is also a precursor to other steroid hormones.

Wild Yam is greatly associated with being a woman's herb, but it has a number of applications for both men and women.

Wild Yam is a Remedy for:

  • Intestinal Colic
  • Menstruation Problems
  • Breast Cysts & Fibroids
  • Liver Problems
  • Cholesterol & Blood Pressure Issues
  • Libido Issues
  • Breast Enhancement
  • Anxiety & Depression
  • Gastritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Inflammation & Pain
  • Digestive Disorders (IBS)
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Menopause Symptoms
  • Weight Gain & Thyroid Issues
  • Asthma
  • Fertility Issues

Wild Yam has a long history of being used for women's reproductive health and menopausal problems. In fact, this is where the birth control pill originally came from - the Diosgenin in Wild Yam.

Wild Yam helps to "naturally" regulate a woman's menstrual cycle by making them more predictable and regular - as well as eliminating cramps or PMS.

BTW, I have gotten very quick results from using this herb for menstrual problems.

The magic of Wild Yam is found in its plant hormone precursors which help to balance the sex hormones, aid the adrenal system, help prevent inflammation, aid bone health, and stabilize the Endocrine System.

Diosgenin can be extracted from the roots & bulb of this plant.

This herb appears to be very safe to use as long as taken at recommended dosages. However, caution is advised for pregnant and nursing women.

Progesterone plays a very important role in helping to maintain your balance especially when it comes to stress-related issues and excess estrogen.

High amounts of stress can cause hormonal imbalances because stress does have a direct affect on your hormones. Stress will cause a stress hormone like "cortisol" to be produced which can then create anxiety.

Cortisol can then deplete your progesterone levels which is needed to counter-balance estrogen which also has a tendency to excite the brain. Are you starting to see the ADHD connection?

One of the main functions of progesterone is to aid in the production of the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone. However, progesterone's most important role is to balance or "oppose" excess estrogen.

As men and women age, their progesterone levels usually decline - while their estrogen levels rise.

In time this can lead to a hormonal imbalance such as low testosterone and progesterone or a condition called Estrogen Dominance.

Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen is the primary female hormone and it affects almost every organ in the human body. It stimulates breast tissue and thickens the vaginal wall.

Estrogen also plays a critical role in bone building and is also thought to have protective effects on your cardiovascular system.

The problem with estrogen is when it becomes the "Master" over progesterone. Progesterone should always be the "Master Hormone".

Your diet and exposure to environmental toxins are two of the main causes of Estrogen Dominance - which is way too much "bad" estrogen and not enough progesterone or testosterone.

Common Estrogen Dominance Symptoms:

  • Irritable & Moody
  • Depressed
  • Anxious
  • Irregular Periods
  • Heavy Menstrual Flow
  • Vaginal Infections
  • Infertility
  • Blood Clots
  • Water Retention
  • Weight Gain
  • Fat in Abdomen, Hips, & Thighs
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Low Libido
  • Leg Cramps
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Digestive Problems
  • Allergies
  • Hair Loss or Balding
  • Lumpy Breasts & Fibroids
  • Tender Breasts
  • Breast Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Dry Eyes & Dry Skin
  • Cold Body Temperature
  • Fatigue & Insomnia
  • Bad Memory
  • Osteoporosis
And the List Goes On...
  • TMJ & Aching Teeth
  • Acceleration of Aging Process
  • Zinc Deficiency
  • Hives & Rashes
  • Acne
  • Chronic Candida
  • Vertigo
  • Blurred Vision
  • Sensation of Foreign Object in Ear (like a Bug)
  • Increased Body Hair (on Arms & Back)
  • Inability to Focus
  • Fragmented Physically, Emotionally, & Spiritually
  • Loss of Confidence
  • Nightmares or Anxious Dreams

Did you know that the normal age for menstruation is 16?

All this time I thought I was the odd ball because I got my period at 16 - a few years later than all of my friends. I remember that my mother was about to take me to the doctor because she was so worried about me - LOL.....Hormone Imbalance video

Phyto-Estrogenic Foods

Phyto-estrogens are also known as "dietary Estrogens" and they have the ability to cause estrogenic (bad estrogen) and/or anti-estrogenic (good estrogen) effects.

Almost every plant food you eat contains phyto-estrogens. There are more than 300 foods that have been shown to contain phyto-estrogens.

It is important to note that phyto-estrogens may actually protect your body from the cancer-causing effects of xeno-estrogens.

Xeno-estrogens are extremely dangerous estrogen mimickers which cause Estrogen Dominance.

These foreign estrogens come from plastics, chemicals in your food, GMOs, chemicals in your personal care products, and chemicals in your water.

Phyto-Estrogenic Foods

Grains & Pseudo Grains: Wheatberries, Oats, Barley, Rice, Millet, Corn, Rye, Amaranth, Buckwheat, Quinoa

Legumes: Lentils, Beans, Soybeans

Seeds: Sesame Seeds, Flax Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds

Fruits: Pomegranate, Grapes, Strawberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Pears, Peaches, Apples, Apricots, Plums, Cherries, Olives, etc.

Vegetables: Kale, Collard Greens, Leafy Greens, Cabbage, Broccoli, Carrots, Yams, Seaweed, Onions, Garlic, etc.

Misc: Coffee, Beer, Bourbon, Mint, Anise, Fennel, Chives, etc.

Moderate consumption of plant foods high in phyto-estrogens is unlikely to lead to any bad health problems.

However, a diet high in plant foods or phyto-estrogens that have an "estrogenic" (bad estrogen) effect could lead to serious health problems.

Estrogenic foods can create nutrient deficiencies such as zinc, magnesium, and all of the B Vitamins.

And because estrogenic foods can create way too much "bad" estrogen, this will then disrupt your hormones - especially progesterone.

Learning about what foods can create "Bad Estrogen" or "Good Estrogen" will help to bring balance back into your life.

Estrogenic Foods

Eliminate or be very careful of consuming the following foods as they can lead to Estrogen Dominance Symptoms.

  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Pomegranate
  • Fennel, Oregano, & Thyme
  • Cloves & Nutmeg

Anti-Estrogenic Foods

Anti-estrogenic foods help in the efficient metabolism of estrogen and are known to produce "Good Estrogen".
  • Flax Seeds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Hemp Seeds
  • Buckwheat
  • Oranges & Berries
  • Broccoli & Cauliflower
  • Onions & Garlic
  • Kale & Green Vegetables
  • Nuts

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi Mushroom may actually be the real "Magic Mushroom". This legendary herb has been used for thousands of years in the East and has withstood the test of time.

It is a "supernatural tonic" and is known as a medicinal mushroom.

In fact, Reishi may be one of the most powerful adaptogenic herbs that has ever existed - meaning is will help bring you into a state of equilibrium or balance.

Other names for Reishi are Spirit Herb, Ling Chi, Ganoderma Lucidum, King of Herbs, The Great Protector, God's Herb, and Mushroom of Immortality

There are different types or colors of Reishi. However, the Red Reishi appears to be the best and most potent.

It is also a nontoxic herb and has been the subject of a lot of research - there is even a museum dedicated to this beloved herb.

Reishi reminds me of our inner brain and I do not think that is a coincidence as Reishi has over 100 known polysaccharides.

This is incredible because Ormus elements are bound up in polysaccharides......David Wolfe on Polysaccharides video

Health Benefits of Reishi Mushroom:

  • Helps Arthritis
  • Strengthens the Liver
  • Tonic for Your Heart & Kidneys
  • Top Anti-Stress Herb
  • Immune System Enhancer

Reishi has powerful properties other than its polysaccharides that stimulate the production of your body's free radical scavenger Superoxide Dismutase or SOD.

And one of the most important reasons to take Reishi is its affect on your energy system. It has the ability to restore all three types of energy - Jing, Chi, and Shen.

Jing Energy

Jing energy is like your bank account - the more that's in there - the more secure you will feel. And we all know when your account goes too low how that feels.

Jing is your fundamental life force which is said to be stored in your kidneys. It is the root energy of your body or where your deep reserves are stored.

Your Jing energy will determine the quality and length of your life.

It is the primal energy associated with your genetic potential. Basically, it is the energy you receive at conception that is meant to last a lifetime.

The more Jing you have - the more youthful you will become.

How You Leak Your Jing Energy video

Chi Energy

Chi energy is the day to day energy that you get from the air you breath and the food you ingest.

Doing deep breathing exercises and eating a nourishing diet will help to replenish your Chi energy.

Chi is basically associated with the metabolic functions that go on in your body daily and the movement of energy. And a deficiency of Chi will tap into your Jing reserves.

The Art of Feng Shui is based on Chi energy and helps to create the perfect flow of energy in your home that will eventually affect the flow of Chi in your body.

For optimal health, your Chi energy should circulate throughout your body without any blockages. If your Chi is blocked, you will have pain and disease.

How to Feng Shui Romance Into Your Life video

BTW, your Feng Shui Kua Number is very important to learn as it will tell you the lucky directions (for placement of bed, etc.) that are best for you.

Shen Energy

Cultivating Shen is more about moving your consciousness into a state of pure energy....What is Chi and Shen Energy video

Shen energy is housed in your heart and is one of the most powerful types of energy - it is what makes you feel like you have a purpose in life.

This energy is very linked to the integrity of a person. It gives a person greater perspective and it is how someone can see the "bigger" picture.

If you are low in Shen, you will find it "consistently" hard to follow through on things or goals in your life.

A person with high Shen energy is very aware of their emotions and tends to be in control rather than controlled.

When your Jing and Chi energies are in balance - you will be able to develop Shen or spiritual energy. Shen is your higher self and your connection to the divine.

May You Reach Your Potential,

Kathryn
