Almost all herbs and spices will be found on alkaline lists. 

Herbs include basil, cilantro, dill, bay leaf, rosemary, marjoram, oregano, parsley, sage, tarragon, thyme, etc. 

Dried herbs are even more alkaline than fresh herbs!

Spices can include salt, pepper, allspice, cardamom, chili powder, cloves, cumin, coriander, garlic powder, onion powder, nutmeg, paprika, cayenne, pumpkin pie spice, turmeric, etc.

Most people think that almonds are an alkaline nut and you will find them on many alkaline lists.

However, they are slightly acidic.  If you soak and sprout almonds, they will most likely become neutral in pH.

Most nuts and seeds will need to have some of their anti-nutrients deactivated before you consume them.  Almonds and hazelnuts are very high in anti-nutrients!

And coconuts will have some of the lowest amounts.

I think that coconut milk is the better non-dairy replacement over almond milk in most recipes. 

Use coconut milk in soups, desserts, and in smoothies.

You can use beans from this alkaline list of foods to make soups, stews, chili, and Mexican meals.

It is customary to soak beans overnight before you cook your beans.  And be sure to dump the soaking water!

Soaking, sprouting, and fermenting beans helps to remove their numerous anti-nutrients.  This helps to make beans much more digestible.

Just be sure that you do not sprout kidney beans - they are toxic.

I use to buy fermented cooked beans from a coop in Indiana when I lived in Michigan.  It was a little funky tasting, but I liked them.

Fermenting cooked beans will provide healthy probiotics and better nutrition from this alkaline food.

Beans will have a low amount of protein in them.

And most beans are not a complete protein and will need to be combined with another food to make a complete protein food.

Lots of people like to combine rice and beans, but there can be other choices. 

You can also combine incomplete protein foods with complete protein sources from this alkaline list of foods.

Organic Japanese natto is a complete protein source

Soybeans are not found on alkaline lists as they are acidic. 

However, by the end of the fermentation process, natto becomes an alkaline food.

Natto may actually be a super food because it's fermented with a beneficial soil based microbe called bacillus subtilis that has potent gut healing properties.

Natto also contains an enzyme called nattokinase that has the ability to dissolve blood clots, improve your blood circulation, and reduces the chance of getting atherosclerosis.

Shockingly, natto has an incredible amount of vitamin K2 which is unusual for a plant based food.

And this fermented food is high in calcium and potassium.

You could easily learn how to make natto at home.  Or you may be able to find natto at a really good Asian grocery store. 

So far, I've only seen natto at a health food store in Hawaii in the refrigerated section of the store.  And I've yet to try this super food.

I think its common to eat natto with white rice. 

You could also eat it alone, but its recommended that you top natto with some sort of seasoning or sauce to distract from its pungent smell.

Pseudo Grain


Buckwheat flour is considered an alkaline food. 

Buckwheat flour is the main ingredient in authentic Japanese soba noodles.

And this pseudo grain is a complete protein source.

Buckwheat unlike its name implies is a gluten free seed and is not a cereal grain.  It just behaves like a grain and will come with a good amount of resistant starch.

Unlike grains, buckwheat contains all eight of the essential amino acids including lysine.  However, how much protein you will be able to receive from buckwheat is still unclear.

Buckwheat does contain powerful antioxidants, B vitamins, and is a great source of magnesium.

Look for soba noodles that are made solely from buckwheat flour and water.  Be aware that some soba noodles will contain wheat.

I really like buckwheat, but buckwheat contains a high amount of oxalates. 

If you want to remove some of the oxalates, you could try soaking and fermenting the buckwheat groats. 

And then you could make buckwheat pancakes or a buckwheat bread.

Ancient Seed

Quinoa is an ancient gluten free alkaline seed that is also a complete protein food.

Quinoa is a very versatile seed and can be eaten just like a grain.

When I lived in Arizona, I had a quinoa porridge at a cafe for breakfast one day.  It was yummy!

Quinoa is an ancient seed of the Inca Indians and is a native plant of the Andes.  Quinoa comes in many different colors such as white or yellow, red, orange, purple, and black.

Quinoa contains all of the essential amino acids and a good amount of the valuable amino acid lysine. 

This seed also has a higher amount of minerals than most grains.  

However, this high protein seed is related to plant foods such as spinach and amaranth.  And yes, it is pretty high in oxalates.

This means that you will have to sprout and even ferment quinoa to make it more digestible.

Once you have deactivated enough of its anti-nutrients, you can use quinoa to make veggie burgers, pancakes, bread, and muffins.

Many people use quinoa as a rice replacement. 

You can also mix cooked quinoa with fruits and vegetables from the alkaline list of foods to create tasty side dishes.

Dairy Foods

Raw goat milk is considered by many to be an alkaline food.

And raw cow's milk is considered to be more neutral.

I happen to love both types of milk and both are complete protein sources.

Someone once asked me what food would I choose if I had only one choice.  And my answer was - raw milk!

I absolutely love this food and I actually choose where I want to live based on whether the place can provide me with a constant supply of raw milk.

You can actually live a pretty healthy life if all you consume is raw cow's milk.  It has vitamins A, D, K2, and E.  Lots of B vitamins including vitamin B12.

Raw grass fed milk comes with healthy bacteria and lots of enzymes. 

And will give you a good supply of electrolytes like calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, and potassium.

Raw milk is also a complete protein food that offers bio-available amino acids. 

And 100% grass fed raw milk will have life giving fatty acids that include omega 3.

The best way to consume raw milk is to just pour it in a glass and drink it all by itself.

However, you can also combine raw milk with other foods if you desire. 

Fruits like berries can be combined with raw milk in your smoothies.  And I like to use raw milk in homemade ice creams.

Neutral pH Fats & Oils

Neutral fats and oils can be part of the new and improved alkaline list of foods because they will not create acidity in the body. 

Fats and oils are considered to be neutral foods.  They are important to include in your diet because they contain important fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins.

Being too acidic can lead to acidosis which will rob your body of certain electrolytes. 

Electrolytes are electrical ions that send energy from cell to cell.

As Far As Meat & Seafood Goes........

  • Fish (especially cold water fish) are less acidic than animal meats
  • Fattier cuts of meat are less acidic than leaner cuts  
  • Raw or rare red meats are less acidic than well done 
  • Wild Eastern Oysters and Wild Caught Clams are a couple of the least acidic shellfish
  • And Raw Wild Caught Sabelfish is probably the least acidic fish

You should be aware of the controversy that surrounds being too alkaline which could lead you to alkalosis.

Alkalosis is basically the opposite of being too acidic - your body fluids become too alkaline.

A lot of people promote being very alkaline, but this is proving to be even more of a problem than acidosis! 

You see your body (when properly fed) will be able to deal with the prevention of acidosis with its built-in buffer systems.

Please be aware that you can only get heme iron from animal muscle meats and seafood. 

Heme iron is more important than non-heme iron which is the type of iron you'll find only in plant foods, eggs, and in milk.
