The Best Fish Oil Supplement
Can be Cold Water Fish

The best fish oil supplement can be cold water fish that you eat at your mealtimes.

Fresh caught fish can fulfill your dietary needs of the more beneficial long chained EPA and DHA Omega 3's.

Find out what type of fish contains the most omega 3 fish oils!

And get some tips on finding the best fish oil supplements.

Most people take fish oil supplements these days to get their EPA and DHA Omega 3s, but many do not know what to look for when choosing the best supplement.

There is also a new choice that may be the most interesting omega 3 fish oil supplement and possibly the best fish oil supplement - in my opinion anyway.

Some of the Best Fish Oil Supplements in Nature

The General Rule:  The colder the water - the oilier the fish.  And the smaller the fish - the safer the omega 3 fish oil.

Wild salmon can be mainly found in the colder waters of the Pacific region.   There are also many species of wild salmon.

Wild Alaskan Chinook or "King Salmon" will have some of the highest amounts of omega 3's.

Wild Alaskan Chinook:

A raw 3 oz. serving = 1991 mg. of Omega 3's.

Wild Coho Salmon:

A raw 3 oz. serving = 1253 mg. of Omega 3's.

Wild Sockeye Salmon

A raw 3 oz. serving = 1108 mg. of Omega 3's.

Wild Pink Salmon:

A raw 3 oz. serving = 965 mg. of Omega 3's.

Wild anchovies are a good choice and contain a lot of Omega 3 fish oil.  And they will definitely qualify as a small fish!

Smaller fish like Anchovies will generally contain high levels of Omega 3 fish oil and not so many toxins like mercury.

European Anchovies:

A raw 3 oz. serving = 1256 mg. of Omega 3's.

Wild Pacific Herring

A raw 3 oz. serving = 1604 mg. of Omega 3's.

Herrings are basically the grown-up version of sardines.

Wild Atlantic Mackerel is very high in Omega 3's - containing twice as much per unit weight as most salmon.

A raw 3 oz. serving = 2270 mg. of Omega 3's.

The Atlantic Mackerel also goes by the name Boston Mackerel.

Beware of King Mackerel as it swims in warmer waters and closer to shore.  It will probably contain more contaminants.

Did You Know Atlantic Salmon is Farmed Salmon?

Wild Atlantic Salmon actually has one of the highest amounts of Omega 3's.

A raw 3 oz. serving = 2198 mg. of Omega 3's.

BTW, Wild Atlantic Salmon is considered an endangered species in the United States.

Therefore, you will only find Farmed Atlantic Salmon in the United States these days.

Farmed Atlantic Salmon can also be high in Omega 3's, but it's also very high in Omega 6.

Beware of farmed salmon as it is probably fed "fish kibble" and can come with deadly toxins.  And its meat can even be dyed (not always) to cover its gray-like color.

How to Cook Fish to Retain Omega 3's

Poaching, steaming, Sous Vide (French technique), and baking seem to be acceptable forms of cooking that retain omega 3's in fish.

Even cooking at higher temps for short periods of time may be okay - like with grilling, broiling, or stir frying.

Deep frying appears to be the worst way to cook fish and can destroy up to 85% of omega 3's in fish!

Just remember, the longer you cook your fish - the less omega 3's in your fish.

Wild caught fish in its fresh and unadulterated state will be the best fish oil supplement that contains the most omega 3's.

Which can mean eating raw fish at your favorite sushi bar or Japanese restaurant.

BTW - How much omega 3's can actually survive the canning process is probably pretty low!

Also, don't count on finding much omega 3's in salted and dried fish.

However, freezing fish and other seafood seems to cause a minimal loss of omega 3's especially if flash frozen immediately.

The Downside to Most Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil supplements are extracted from the tissues of oily fish like farmed salmon, tuna, herring, sardines, anchovies, and mackerel.

Most fish oil supplements are associated with strong fishy burps.

And most will contain too many toxins because they are sourced from contaminated fish.

Many of these fish oils will go thru a process called molecular distillation to have toxins removed.

Unfortunately, this distillation process damages their delicate omega 3 fish oils.

The Better Fish Oil Supplements.....

  • Use Wild Caught Fish
  • Do Not Contain Fillers
  • Contain Unaltered Fish Oil
  • Contain Adequate Amounts of EPA & DHA
  • Guarantees Purity, although this will probably mean Molecular Distillation

The Best Fish Oil Supplements

Cod liver oil is probably one of the most popular and trusted fish oil supplements.

It was actually used as a food in parts of Europe and is now being used as a whole food dietary supplement.

Many people consider cod liver oil to be the best fish oil supplement.

Cod liver oil is extracted from the livers of Cod.

It's a great source of EPA and DHA Omega 3's as well as Vitamins A and D.  It also has monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids.

1 Tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil can give you over 2 Grams of Omega 3's (EPA and DHA combined).

Each brand will differ in quality and the amount of long chained omega 3's.

Look for brands of cod liver oil that use ethical and traditional methods to produce their cod liver oil.

And stay away from brands that process this delicate oil using high heat, chemicals, micro filtration, deodorizing, and bleaching.

The New Kid on The Block

Fermented Skate Liver Oil is one of the best fish oil supplements as far as I can tell.

This liver oil is fermented and made using a proprietary cold process.

It's made from the liver of the skate fish that lives in colder waters.

This supplement contain the full range of Omega fatty acids - 3, 6, 7, and 9.

Fermented Skate Liver Oil is also abundant in Vitamins A, D, K2, and E.

To name just some of its amazing fish oil benefits.

Weston A. Price always used a combination of Cod Liver Oil which is high in Vitamins A & D.

Along with Butter Oil which is high in Vitamin K2 to heal cavities and other numerous afflictions in his patients.

I've heard that just 1 drop of fermented skate liver oil a day is sufficient for the prevention of tooth decay.

To me this supplement just feels more balanced and they claim it has more DHA than their Fermented Cod Liver Oil.

You can find this "unique" and "perhaps" the best fish oil supplement at Green Pasture (I prefer the Non-flavored capsules).
